When I was a child, I was scared of the dark. It was one of the scariest things I’d ever encountered, and I couldn’t understand why. My family had just moved to a new town, and it was exceptionally dark at night. After having lived in the same house for over a decade, my parents were convinced that I was still afraid of the dark.
When my father walked into the room with his chain saw, they thought they’d found the answer. They thought that if they let me see him with his chain saw, I’d be so scared that I’d stop being afraid of the dark. But nothing could have been further from the truth. Before my father came into the room, my fear of the dark was almost nonexistent.
When he got close enough for me to see him with his chain saw, my fear returned in full force. The darkness had an effect on me that would last until he left. Later that night, my sister begged him to come back to our room and show us what he had done with his chain saw.
He gave her exactly what she wanted: a demonstration of what he could do with it. He didn’t take any pleasure in frightening us; he merely wanted to help us realize how little effect bad things had on us.
